Yingshihan Zhu
Hi! I am Shihan.
I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Philosophy at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where I also earned a graduate certificate in Interactive Technology and Pedagogy. Before that, I completed my B.A. in Philosophy at Boston University. I am a Writing Across the Curriculum Fellow at Lehman College, CUNY, during the 2025-2026 academic year.
I work at the intersection of social/political philosophy, feminist philosophy, ethics, and applied ethics (including bioethics, tech ethics, and AI ethics). My research explores the moral, epistemic, and sociopolitical implications of power dynamics within and between differently situated social groups. My dissertation, The Moral Complexities of Privileged Oppressed Agents, examines the moral responsibility, vices, and moral competence of individuals who are simultaneously privileged and oppressed in different aspects of their identities.
Outside of philosophy, I enjoy growing avocados and taking long walks in the woods.
A note on my name: While I publish and present under my full name, I go by Shihan in most other contexts to honor my mother’s family name (Ying).
